Except it’s 2026 and the landscape has genuinely fragmented. You’ve got Redis-backed queue libraries like BullMQ that you self-host, cloud-native platforms like Inngest and Trigger.dev that handle the infrastructure for you, and older players like Agenda and Bee-Queue that some teams are still running in production. The architectural decision you make here has real consequences: for reliability, for cost, for how easy it is to debug a job that silently failed at 3am.
I’ve used most of these in production. Here’s what I actually think.

How I Evaluated These Tools
I’m not going to rank these by GitHub stars or regurgitate their marketing pages. Here’s what actually matters when you’re building a production SaaS:
- Reliability: Does it retry failed jobs correctly? Does it handle crashes and restarts gracefully?
- Observability: Can you see what’s happening without writing your own logging layer?
- Developer experience: How long does it take to go from zero to a working job queue in a new project?
- Scalability: What happens when you go from 100 jobs/day to 100,000?
- Cost: Total cost of ownership, including your time debugging infrastructure
- Ecosystem fit: Does it play well with TypeScript, serverless, Docker, etc.?
1. BullMQ — The Reliable Workhorse
BullMQ is the spiritual successor to Bull (which itself was the de-facto standard for years), built on top of Redis. If you’ve been in the Node.js ecosystem for more than two years, you’ve probably used one of them. BullMQ modernized the codebase with TypeScript-first design, better concurrency controls, and more sophisticated queue patterns like flows (parent-child job dependencies).
Here’s what a basic BullMQ setup looks like:

Where BullMQ Falls Short
- You’re managing Redis. That means backups, scaling, failover. On a side project this is fine; at scale it’s ops work.
- The dashboard (BullBoard) is functional but not beautiful. Debugging a complex job failure requires digging.
- No built-in support for serverless/edge environments — it expects a long-running Node process
- Fan-out patterns and complex event-driven workflows get verbose fast

BullMQ itself is free and open-source. Your cost is Redis hosting. On DigitalOcean, a managed Redis instance starts at around $15/month for a 1GB instance, which handles a surprising amount of throughput. If you want BullMQ Pro (which adds features like batched jobs and better observability hooks), it’s $99/month for a commercial license — honestly only worth it for large teams.
Best For
Teams that already run Redis, want full control over their infrastructure, and have the ops capacity to manage it. Also great for high-throughput scenarios where you need to squeeze every bit of performance.

2. Trigger.dev — Best Managed Platform for SaaS Builders
Trigger.dev takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of a library you integrate into your existing infrastructure, it’s a platform where your background jobs run as “tasks” — durable, observable, and managed for you. The pitch is that you write normal TypeScript functions, decorate them with their SDK, and Trigger handles retries, scheduling, observability, and the underlying queue infrastructure.
What makes Trigger.dev interesting in 2026 is that they’ve leaned hard into long-running jobs. If you’ve ever tried to run a 10-minute AI processing job on a serverless function and hit timeout limits, Trigger.dev is built specifically for that problem. Their “wait” primitives let jobs pause, wait for external events, and resume — without holding a server connection open.

What Trigger.dev Does Well
- Excellent developer experience — the local dev mode with real-time job logs is genuinely great
- Built for long-running and AI-heavy workloads (document processing, LLM pipelines, etc.)
- Open-source core — you can self-host if you want to stay on-prem
- Durable execution: jobs survive deploys, crashes, and timeouts
- First-class TypeScript with full type inference on payloads
- Scheduled tasks, one-off jobs, and event-triggered jobs all in one SDK
Where Trigger.dev Falls Short
- Relatively newer than BullMQ — less community content, fewer Stack Overflow answers when you’re stuck
- Self-hosting is possible but adds complexity (it’s a Docker Compose setup with several services)
- Pricing can add up at high volume — worth modeling your job count before committing
- If your jobs are simple and fast (sub-second), this is overkill

Best For
SaaS builders who don’t want to manage Redis/queue infrastructure, teams building AI-heavy workflows with long-running jobs, and anyone who values observability out of the box. If you’re building something like a document processing pipeline or an async AI feature, Trigger.dev is the tool I’d reach for first in 2026.
3. Inngest — Best for Event-Driven Architectures
Inngest’s core idea is different from both BullMQ and Trigger.dev: everything is an event. You don’t add a job to a queue; you send an event, and functions subscribe to events. This maps really naturally onto how modern SaaS apps actually work — a user signs up (event), which triggers a welcome email (function), an analytics update (function), and a CRM sync (function), all in parallel.
Inngest also has excellent serverless support. Because your functions are invoked via HTTP (Inngest calls your deployed function URL), you can run Inngest on Vercel, Netlify, or any serverless platform without a long-running process. This is a genuine architectural advantage if you’re on a serverless stack.

- Fully managed means you’re dependent on Inngest’s infrastructure — no self-hosted option (yet)
- Pricing gets expensive at high event volume compared to self-hosted alternatives
- Less suited for pure throughput scenarios (e.g., processing millions of small jobs quickly)

Inngest’s free tier includes 50,000 function runs/month — generous for early projects. The Starter plan is $25/month for 500,000 runs. Pro is $100/month for 5M runs. High-volume pricing is custom. Worth noting: a single “function” with multiple steps counts as one run, which is actually pretty favorable for complex workflows.
Best For
Teams on serverless infrastructure (Next.js on Vercel, etc.), event-driven architectures where one action triggers multiple downstream processes, and anyone who wants zero infrastructure management and excellent built-in observability.
4. Honorable Mentions
Quirrel (Archived)
Worth mentioning only to say: don’t use it. It was a great idea (HTTP-based job queues for serverless), but the project was archived in 2022. Inngest and Trigger.dev have filled this gap better.
Temporal
Temporal is the nuclear option. It’s a full workflow orchestration platform, originally from Uber, and it’s genuinely powerful — but it’s also complex to operate and has a steep learning curve. If you’re building something like a multi-step financial transaction system with strict durability requirements, Temporal is worth evaluating. For most SaaS apps? It’s overkill. Trigger.dev and Inngest have borrowed many of Temporal’s best ideas and packaged them in something approachable.
pg-boss
If you’re already running PostgreSQL and want to avoid adding Redis to your stack, pg-boss is underrated. It uses Postgres as the queue backend, which means one less infrastructure dependency. It’s not as feature-rich as BullMQ, but for moderate job volumes it works reliably. Worth considering for small teams that want simplicity.

Use Case Decision Framework
Use BullMQ if…
- You already have Redis in your stack
- You need raw throughput (millions of small, fast jobs)
- You want full control and zero vendor dependency
- You’re comfortable managing infrastructure or already have a DevOps setup
- Your jobs are simple: enqueue, process, done
Use Trigger.dev if…
- You’re building AI-powered features with long-running processing (LLM chains, document pipelines)
- You want managed infrastructure but also want the option to self-host later
- You need human-in-the-loop workflows (jobs that pause and wait for approval)
- Observability and debugging experience matter a lot to your team
- You’re on a traditional Node.js server (not serverless)
Use Inngest if…
- You’re on a serverless stack (Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare Workers)
- Your architecture is event-driven — one action should trigger multiple downstream functions
- You want zero infrastructure and don’t need self-hosting
- You’re building drip sequences, onboarding flows, or multi-step user journeys
Pricing Breakdown (Real Numbers)
Let’s say you’re a SaaS with 1,000 active users generating roughly 50,000 background jobs per month (welcome emails, report generation, webhook processing, etc.):
- BullMQ: ~$15-30/month for managed Redis on DigitalOcean or similar. Essentially free at this scale.
- Trigger.dev: Free tier covers you at 50K runs isn’t available — their free tier is 5K. You’d be on the $50/month plan. Still reasonable.
- Inngest: 50K runs/month is covered by the free tier. You’re paying $0 until you grow.
At 1M jobs/month, the math changes significantly. BullMQ still costs ~$30-50/month (maybe a bigger Redis instance). Inngest is $100/month. Trigger.dev would require a custom quote at that volume. This is when BullMQ’s self-hosted model starts to look very attractive from a pure cost perspective — assuming you have the ops capacity to run it.
A Note on Hosting Your Queue Infrastructure
If you go the self-hosted route with BullMQ, your Redis hosting matters. I’ve had good results with DigitalOcean’s managed Redis — automated backups, failover, and no surprise bills. My Honest Recommendation
Stop agonizing and pick based on your actual situation:
If you’re building a new SaaS in 2026 on a traditional Node.js backend, start with Trigger.dev. The free tier is enough to launch, the developer experience is genuinely excellent, and the observability you get out of the box will save you hours of debugging. You can always migrate to BullMQ later if costs become a concern at scale — but most teams never hit that point.
If you’re on a serverless stack, Inngest is the obvious choice. Trying to run BullMQ on Vercel is a bad time. Inngest was built for this environment and it shows.
If you’re an established team with existing Redis infrastructure, BullMQ is probably already the right answer. Don’t migrate away from something that’s working just because newer tools exist. BullMQ in 2026 is still excellent software.
The worst decision is not making one — running jobs synchronously in your request handlers because “we’ll add a queue later” is how you end up with 30-second API responses and angry users. Pick any of these three and ship.
