You’ve probably heard the hype: Claude is the AI that “actually understands code.” Maybe a colleague swore by it, or you saw it trending on HN after some benchmark flex. Either way, you’re here because you want to know if Claude Code is worth your time — and more importantly, your money — before you commit to yet another AI tool subscription.
I’ve been using Claude for code-related work for over a year now, across real production projects: a Next.js SaaS app, a Python data pipeline, a handful of internal tools, and more refactoring sessions than I care to count. This isn’t a regurgitation of Anthropic’s marketing page. Here’s what Claude Code actually does well, where it falls flat, and who should be using it.

- Claude.ai (the web interface) — where most developers start
- Claude API — for building custom integrations or tooling
- Claude in third-party tools — Cursor, Zed, and other editors have Claude integrations
- Claude Code (CLI tool) — Anthropic’s official agentic coding tool that can read, write, and execute code directly in your terminal
For this review, I’m covering the full picture — primarily Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3 Opus used through claude.ai and the API, plus some hands-on time with the Claude Code CLI. What Claude Code Does Well
1. Genuinely Large Context Window
Claude’s 200K token context window isn’t just a spec sheet number — it changes how you work. I’ve pasted entire files (3,000+ lines), multiple related modules, and a long error trace all in one prompt, and Claude held the thread throughout. With ChatGPT or earlier Copilot chat, you’d hit the limit and watch the model “forget” the beginning of your codebase mid-conversation.
Practically, this means: paste your entire utils.py, your models.py, and the failing test file, ask Claude why the test is breaking — and it will actually read all of it before answering. That sounds obvious but most tools still fumble this.
2. Reasoning Through Edge Cases
Claude’s code suggestions tend to include error handling, edge cases, and type safety that you’d otherwise need to explicitly ask for. Ask it to write a function that parses user input, and it’ll handle None, empty strings, and malformed data by default. I’ve caught this repeatedly — Claude writes defensive code without being told to.
Compare this to some other tools that give you the happy path and leave you to figure out the failure modes yourself.
3. Explaining Legacy and Unfamiliar Code
This is where Claude genuinely shines. Drop in a 500-line class you inherited from a former team member, ask “what does this actually do and what are the risks?”, and Claude gives you a structured, honest breakdown. It’ll flag things like “this method mutates state unexpectedly” or “this regex will fail on Unicode input” — the kind of insight a senior code reviewer gives you.
I used this extensively when picking up a Django project mid-flight. Saved me probably two days of archaeology.
4. Refactoring with Intent
Claude understands why you’re refactoring, not just what to change. Tell it “I want to make this more testable” and it’ll restructure toward dependency injection. Tell it “this is too slow” and it’ll look at algorithmic complexity, not just micro-optimizations. It asks clarifying questions when the intent is ambiguous, which is the right behavior.
5. The Claude Code CLI for Agentic Tasks
The official Claude Code CLI tool is legitimately impressive for larger tasks. You give it a goal — “add pagination to the users endpoint and write tests for it” — and it reads your codebase, makes the changes, and runs the tests. It’s not perfect (more on that below), but for well-scoped tasks on a codebase it can read fully, it produces shippable code more often than not.

Where Claude Code Falls Short
1. No Native IDE Integration (Out of the Box)
Claude doesn’t have a VS Code extension the way GitHub Copilot does. You’re either using the web interface (context-switching nightmare), the API through a third-party tool like Cursor, or the CLI. For inline autocomplete while you type, Claude is not the answer. GitHub Copilot and Cursor (which can use Claude under the hood) are better for that workflow.
2. Occasional Overconfidence
Claude will sometimes give you a confidently-worded answer that’s subtly wrong — especially with newer libraries, niche frameworks, or anything where the training data is sparse. It’s better than GPT-4 at flagging uncertainty, but it still slips. Always run the code. Never trust any AI output blindly, but with Claude specifically: trust the reasoning, verify the specifics.
3. The CLI Tool Has a Learning Curve
The Claude Code CLI is powerful but not plug-and-play. You need to understand how to scope tasks correctly, manage permissions (it asks before writing files, which is good), and handle cases where it misunderstands the project structure. It’s a tool for developers who want to invest time in learning it — not a magic wand.
4. Cost at Scale
If you’re using the API for heavy workloads — running Claude on every PR, processing large codebases automatically — costs add up fast. Claude 3 Opus in particular is expensive per token. For individual developers, the Pro plan is fine. For teams running it at scale, budget carefully.

Real Use Cases — Who Should Use Claude for Code
Use Claude if you need…
- Deep code reviews: Paste a PR diff and ask “what would a senior engineer flag here?” — Claude gives you substantive feedback, not just style nitpicks.
- Understanding unfamiliar codebases: Onboarding to a legacy project, or picking up someone else’s code mid-project.
- Architecture discussions: “Should I use event sourcing here or is that overkill?” — Claude reasons through tradeoffs better than most tools.
- Writing tests for existing code: Give it the function, ask for comprehensive test cases including edge cases. Consistently good output here.
- Debugging complex issues: Multi-file, multi-system bugs where you need to paste a lot of context at once.
- Documentation generation: Claude writes clear, accurate docstrings and README sections. Pair it with a tool like AI writing tools built for technical content for polished docs.
Don’t use Claude as your primary tool if you need…
- Inline autocomplete while typing: Use GitHub Copilot or Cursor for this.
- Real-time code suggestions in your IDE: Same answer — Claude isn’t built for this workflow natively.
- A cheap high-volume API for simple tasks: Haiku is affordable, but if you’re doing simple completions at scale, there are cheaper options.
The Claude Code CLI: Specific Impressions
I want to give the Claude Code CLI its own section because it’s a genuinely different product from the chat interface. It’s an agentic tool — you give it a task, it reads your files, makes changes, runs commands, and reports back.
What works well: scoped, well-defined tasks. “Add input validation to the create_user endpoint following the same pattern as create_post” — it reads both files, understands the pattern, applies it correctly, and writes a test. Impressive.
What doesn’t work well: vague or large-scope tasks. “Refactor the entire auth module” will produce something technically functional but architecturally questionable. You need to break big tasks into smaller, specific ones. That’s actually good practice anyway, but it means the CLI isn’t a “set it and forget it” tool yet.
The permission model is good — it asks before writing files or running commands, which is the right default. I’ve never had it do something destructive without warning.
My Actual Workflow With Claude
Here’s how I actually use it, in case a concrete workflow helps:
- Morning PR reviews: I paste diffs into Claude.ai and ask for a review focused on correctness and edge cases. Takes 2 minutes, catches things I’d miss when I’m not fully caffeinated.
- Debugging sessions: When I’m stuck, I paste the relevant files + the error + what I’ve tried. Claude’s context window means I don’t have to cherry-pick what to include.
- Writing tests: I paste a function or class and ask for test coverage. I review the output, but it’s a solid starting point 90% of the time.
- Architecture questions: I use Claude like a senior engineer I can bounce ideas off. “Here’s what I’m building, here’s my current approach, what am I missing?”
- CLI for greenfield features: When adding a new, well-scoped feature to an existing project, the CLI is genuinely faster than doing it manually.
I don’t use Claude for inline autocomplete — I use Cursor for that, which can actually use Claude under the hood for the chat/edit features while using a separate model for autocomplete. Best of both worlds.
Final Recommendation
Claude Code is the best AI tool I’ve used for the thinking parts of software development — reviewing, understanding, reasoning about architecture, and writing nuanced code for complex problems. It’s not a replacement for a good IDE integration, and it’s not the cheapest option if you’re running it at scale.
If you’re a professional developer who writes non-trivial code daily, the $20/month Pro plan is a no-brainer. The time you save on code reviews and debugging alone covers it. If you’re primarily looking for autocomplete while you type, start with GitHub Copilot instead — or use Cursor, which gives you both.
For teams: the Team plan at $25/user/month is worth it if your team is doing regular code reviews, onboarding new engineers, or dealing with legacy code. The ROI is obvious within the first week.
One last thing: Claude isn’t static. Anthropic ships improvements frequently, and the Claude Code CLI in particular has gotten dramatically better over the past six months. The trajectory is good. If you tried it six months ago and bounced off it, it’s worth another look.
